City National Bank’s processing of cashiers checks for remote clients previously involved clients sending check issuance information via fax or secure email to their New York office. The issued checks would then be sent overnight to client locations. This highly manual process was time-consuming and prone to errors. Solution: City National Bank approached AP Technology to provide an in-house secure banking solution that would enhance their service to title offices and attorneys by automating cashiers check issuance and financial data exchange.
As a regional bank with 72 locations, one of City National Bank’s growth strategies is to develop differentiating services for a niche of mid-size commercial clients that allow the bank to expand beyond their primary footprint. A remote check issuance solution enables City National Bank to meet client needs for on-site cashier check issuance in remote locations where there is not a bank branch. When launched, competitors did not offer this type of service. A remote check issuance service remains a unique and a key component of City National Bank’s product strategy.
The bank’s largest concern with implementing a new remote check issuance system was security. The new system needed to provide extensive internal controls. In addition, critical system reporting had to be compatible with the bank’s existing dispute resolution and positive pay systems.
SOLUTION:
The solution for City National Bank was and is the branded Remote Check Express, which is powered by AP Technology’s APSecure Remote Official Check product. APSecure provides City National Bank’s clients the capability to log in from their offices and request cashiers checks from a user-friendly, web-based check-creation interface. Check requests are automatically routed for manager approvals at the client location and then sent to City National Bank.
After final bank approval, the remote client is notified, and checks are delivered to a secure local printer. The correct check layout and signatures are applied automatically. Signature logic intelligently applies zero, one, or two signatures based on the check amount, and check numbers are assigned as checks are being printed.
The APSecure solution encrypts check data all the way into the printer. Printer firmware ensures data integrity, eliminates the possibility of duplicate check printing, and also prevents checks from being printed anywhere but at the designated printer. Appropriate entitlements can be assigned to segregate user duties.

City National Bank can limit a remote user to only requesting checks or it can designate a user with full entitlement to request, print, and approve checks.

APSecure also offers extensive reporting capabilities. All check printing and system activity is detailed in a comprehensive audit trail and event log for administrator review and export. And every check issued with Remote Check Express is automatically recorded in the bank’s positive pay system. The system is tightly integrated with City National Bank’s existing positive pay system to deliver formatted positive pay files to the bank’s system on a scheduled basis.

Clients that are already using the Remote Check Express service are extremely pleased with the convenience it offers. City National Bank now has clients issuing up to 500 checks per month and the service is generating $2500 to $5000 per client per month in revenue.
